Hypermarkets in Calais

Image - French Confectionery Stalls

The majority of day trippers to the Calais region of France head for one of two hypermarkets which are conveniently located to the Eurotunnel and Ferry Terminals.

The Auchan chain is one of the largest in France and is only 5 minutes drive from the Eurotunnel terminal, and approximately 15 minutes away from Calais ferry terminals.

A good alternative is Carrefour, which has an outlet at the popular Cite Europe shopping center. This is an popular choice for the majority of day trippers due to the sheer number of different shops within the Cite Europe complex as a whole.

If you are shopping primarily for alcohol, you may find a quieter shopping experience by visiting one of the wine warehouse outlets, usually situated adjecent to main roads in the Calais and Coquelles areas. These are a good option for bulk purchases.

For specialised shops and local gifts, there are numerous options in towns a short drive from Calais in places like Lille, Brugge, Le Touquet and Boulogne. See our Destinations page for more details on day trips to these areas of Northern France and Belgium.
